AQUATIC INVASIVE SPECIES PROGRAM

APIPP's Aquatic Program works to prevent the spread and control of invasive aquatic plants and animals in Adirondack waterways through the following specialty areas:

AWARENESS BUILDING

AIS Staff works with partners around the region to grow awareness about Aquatic Invasive Species in the Adirondacks through public speaking engagements, providing training on species identification, presenting research, and answering inquiries from the general public. Please reach out to our team to have APIPP staff come train your community group and order free outreach materials to help inform your local community about invasive species spread prevention in the Adirondacks.

BIOBASE MAPPING 

APIPP’s AIS program is working to have every lake in the Adirondacks mapped using BioBase. Knowing the physical conditions of underwater ecosystems will help resource managers know where to focus scouting efforts. 

EARLY DETECTION SURVEYS - VOLUNTEERS MAKE THE DIFFERENCE! 

Carrying out lake surveys, utilizing contracted seasonal crews, and training volunteers to join the Lake Protector Corps, APIPP works to catch infestations before they grow to disrupt ecosystems and economies. 

LAKE MANAGEMENT TRACKER

Starting in 2018, the APIPP Aquatic Project began partnering with the Adirondack Park Agency and Adirondack Lakes Alliance to expand the use of a new mobile monitoring tool allowing lake associations to assess how well their aquatic invasive plant management efforts are working. If your lake association or Adirondack area municipality is interested in getting trained in this project, please reach out to our team and we will work to accommodate you in future planning. 

PREVENTION

The Adirondack Watershed Institute operates free Boat Wash and Decontamination Stations throughout the Adirondack Park. These stations are vital to ensuring that boaters, anglers, and recreationists are able to Clean, Drain, and Dry gear before entering waterways. Human activity is the primary vector for spreading aquatic invasive species into and around the Adirondacks. Clean, Drain, Dry is a winning strategy to keep waters clean for future generations.
