Join the Adirondack Park Invasive Plant Program (APIPP), Lake George Association (LGA), and Lake George Land Conservancy LGLC) for an educational walk along the Buck Mountain Trail in the Lake George region. Participants will learn basic plant identification, how to identify hemlock trees, how to identify hemlock woolly adelgid, and how to report invasive species like hemlock woolly adelgid using the iMapInvasives app.
The Guided HWA Walk is fun way to get out into the woods with trained naturalists and learn about Adirondack forests while also gaining the tools to properly identify and report invasive species. The guided walk will begin at the Buck Mountain trailhead in Fort Ann and continue up the trail, with the group learning plant identification and seeing examples of HWA along the way. There will be an optional hike to Stewart’s Ledge overlook for those interested in continuing farther. The total hike to Stewart’s Ledge from the parking area is about 0.7 mile, with about 270 feet in elevation gain. We ask everyone participating in the Guided HWA Walk to bring the appropriate gear for spending a couple hours in the woods in March.
If you can't attend the Guided HWA Walk, you can still participate in Lake George Hemlock Woolly Adelgid Monitoring Weekend!
Lake George Hemlock Woolly Adelgid Monitoring Weekend is a collaborative effort between APIPP, LGA, and LGLC to train and encourage people to identify and report HWA in the Adirondacks. By reporting HWA and other invasive species, community scientists are helping scientists better understand how to manage and prevent the spread of invasive species.
