SUMMARY:Best Management Practices for Roadside Invasive Species
DESCRIPTION:Invasive species can wreak havoc along our roadways by blocking signage\, damaging infrastructure\, and increasing the need for roadside maintenance\, all of which cost time and money. “Best Management Practices for Roadside Invasive Species” will review how to identify invasive plants that are commonly found along roadsides\, how to help prevent spreading those species to new locations\, and the best management practices for controlling roadside invasives. We will also discuss common and emerging Adirondack invasive plant species and forest pests: identification\, look-a-likes\, species-specific spread mechanisms\, and best management practices. \nThis webinar is designed for highway right-of-way professionals\, including maintenance and operations staff from state\, county\, and local governments\, and offers 1.5 NYS pesticide credits in categories 3a\, 6a\, and 9. Live participation in the webinar and successful completion of an online quiz are required to receive credits. While designed for highway department personnel and pesticide applicators\, “Best Management Practices for Roadside Invasive Species” will also provide important information for land managers and homeowners. \nREGISTER NOW

SUMMARY:Why They're Good at Being Bad
DESCRIPTION:Invasive species are everywhere\, and once they’ve arrived\, they are extremely difficult to remove. In this fascinating talk\, APIPP Communications Manager Shaun Kittle will explore why invasive species are so good at spreading and why they are so adept at pushing out native plants and animals. It all comes down to adaptions—special characteristics that make a species well-suited to live in its environment. In the case of invasive species\, many of them can live in a range of conditions\, reproduce by multiple means\, and alter their environment\, all of which gives them a huge advantage. \nYes\, dealing with invasives is a challenge\, but there is hope! Tia Legge\, the Agriculture/Horticulture/Natural Resources Educator for Clinton County Cornell Cooperative Extension\, will talk about how managing invasive species can be tricky business in the home garden and requires a lot of patience and dedication\, but there are some management strategies to reduce their numbers that are a little more low-effort that can at least keep their numbers a touch lower without breaking your back or the bank. \nREGISTER NOW
